First Session of the “K-CM Global Academy” Held to Strengthen Global Competitiveness

The first session of the “K-CM Global Academy – CM Practice Course Based on the CMAA Body of Knowledge (BoK)” took place on October 2 at the PPS Hall of the Seoul Regional Public Procurement Service. The course is jointly organized by CMAK and the Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Management (KICEM), and sponsored by the Seoul Regional Public Procurement Service.

Construction projects are becoming larger and more complex, overseas business is expanding, and new demand is emerging from sectors such as AI and data centers. The Academy was designed in response to these trends. Its aim is to build global construction management (CM) capabilities that cover the entire project life cycle.

The session opened with welcoming remarks from CMAK Chairman Bae Yung-hwi. Professor Cha Hee-sung of Ajou University then gave a lecture titled “Understanding Global CM and the CMAA CM Standards of Practice.”

Professor Cha explained how the CMAA BoK is structured and introduced the core concepts of global CM. Drawing mainly on U.S. examples, he compared global CM practice with Korea’s construction management system. He also reviewed the role and key tasks of CM at each project phase, and led a discussion on the main challenges in raising the professionalism and global competitiveness of Korean CM.

About 40 trainees attended, including staff from public-sector project owners such as the Seoul Regional Public Procurement Service and the Korea District Heating Corporation, as well as executives and employees of CM firms. Participants showed strong interest in learning the global CM body of knowledge.

The K-CM Global Academy is a four-session course. The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:
▲ Session 2 (October 23): Project and Contract Management and the Role of CM (Professor Kang Young-cheol, Yonsei University)
▲ Session 3 (November 27): Integrated Management of Schedule, Cost, Quality and Safety (Professor Kim Tae-wan, Incheon National University)
▲ Session 4 (December 4): Risk Management, Digital CM and Completion Ceremony (Professor Kim Jeong-in, Kookmin University)
